Vavi Hospital update - 7th November 2006

Dear friends,

The Vavi hospital building is coming up fast. During the past month, the first installment sponsorship of approximately Rs.4 lakhs from The American Tamil Medical Association - ATMA ( www.atmaus.org), is received through the Tamilnadu Foundation (http://www.tnftnc.org).

Complying with the requirements of TNF, we have submitted the project estimate, photographs of the building, Letter from the trust requesting the funding, copy of the trust deed and the invoice for the building materials like cement, tiles, bricks, iron rods etc., TNF has processed the project and the funding will be realised within 10 days.

The proposal letter with Isha foundation for the doctor and medicines is submitted, and the trust members are visiting Isha Coimbatore on Monday, 13th September to finalise the arrangement.

I will post the latest snaps of the building soon.

So far, Rs.3.4 lacs donation has been collected and further 1.6 lacs is committed and yet to be received.

I am happy to share a great news with you today. The American Tamil Medical Association - ATMA (www.atmaus.org) has come forward to sponsor US$ 17000 for the project. The news item has been featured in The Hindu on 10th January - http://www.hindu.com/2006/01/08/stories/2006010814160500.htm.

We thank Dr.Sundaram, our long time member, guide and supporter for proposing the project to ATMA.

Vavi hospital Update and Library Opening - 22 Dec 2005

Further in our hospital project,

- Fund collection team is in the collection process, and the team is now meeting the potential donors in Tirupur.
-- So far Rs.1.6 lacs has been collected, and further Rs.6.2 lacs has been commited.
-- Three individuals have committed to sponsor one room of the building, costing between 75 thousand to 1 Lac rupees. They have consented for the trust to utilise the money for any part of the building.
It has been a very encouraging response and the trustees are enthusiastic about it.

In addition, with the assitance of SSL funds, Vavipalayam Panchayat has opened two part time Public Libraries in the vavipalayam village.
1. East Kullampalayam - On 8th December 2005 10.00 AM in a simple function with the people of local hamlet, library has been dedicated to the public.
2. Kottapalayam - On 8th December 2005 11.00 AM in a simple function with the people of local hamlet, library has been dedicated to the public.

With that there are 5 libraries in our village, all of them coming under district library scheme where a librarian is appointed and managed by the government. Three of them are full time libraries, operating from 8AM to 5PM with one hour break in between at Kazhuveripalayam, Vavipalayam and Manthiripalayam hamlets. The two part time libraries opened now will work from 7AM to 10 AM which can be changed if required for local people convenience.

Now, the geographical coverage of these library network is effective that anywhere people don't have to travel more than two kilometers to reach a library in our 11 hamlet village.

Vavi Hospital Project Update - 04 Nov 2005

In the past weeks, the Trust members have formed a team for fund collection within the village, and commenced their activity. Everyday the team starts at 4 PM and going door to door till 9 PM - for four to five days a week. They will move from one to the other and cover all the hamelts. In the villages, the donation doesn't happen in the first instance. Generally people will say how much they will donate as a commitment which will be written in a notebook. Then, they will handover the cash in one or two installments as they get money in the next corp sale (within a few months). So far, Rs.70000 has been commited, and few thousand rupees has been collected.

New project in Vavipalayam - Hospital

It has been a long time since we have been actively participated and worked together. I am happy to write you about a new project being initiated at Vavipalayam.

Its about building a permanent hospital in our village, which will be useful to about 50 hamlets in and around our village. Quality health care is not reachable for most of the lower income people in these hamlets and they have to travel about 20 to 30 KM to reach a hospital. First Aid for accidents and snake-bite is never reachable on time, and the public transport facilities are either not available or insufficient. We have involved the local people right from this project inception. Actually, the requirement has been raised by the people only. A trust has been formed in the name of "Village People Welfare Foundation" (VPWF). There are 31 people from our and nearby villages as trustees in the trust. Each trustee has to make a minimum donation of Rs.10000 each for the trust (The total seed money of Rs.3.1 lacs). The trust is already registered and trustees would start meeting within themselves, and carry out their mission of building and operating the hospital at vavipalayam. As a person from the village, I myself is a trustee along with Sundaramoorthy, Velmani and other people.

The hospital is planned with a Consulting room for the doctor, one General Ward with 4 bed's, toilets, Doctor's Personal Room, and Personal room for the Nurse. Discussions were on with different organisations in and around Kovai to get their expertise in running the hospital. We are discussing with "Isha foundation" to provide the residential doctor and nurse, and the medicines to run the hospital. It has been felt that the doctor and nurse should stay with the hospital for effective running of the hospital considering the distance of the village from the nearby towns.

It is estimated that the total cost of the building would be about 15 lacs including the furniture, apart from the land for the building. The land is identified at very nominal cost for the hospital project. We are confident of collecting seven lacs as donation from the village people and other contacts around the village apart from the seed money of 3 lacs from the trustees. Rest of 5 to 6 lacs need to be mobilised by outside donations.

The bank account for the trust has been opened and about 2 lacs is already deposited by trustees. A detailed project report with a professional costing of the building and materials is being prepared which I will circulate, would provide a good insight about the project.

I will be the contact/communication point between the team and the VPWF trust, and am responsible for timely and periodical updates and to air the views of the team to the trust and back.
